Sound of Freedom Tops $10M in Box Office PreSales
Angel Studios has announced that the independent film Sound of Freedom has topped $10M in pre-sales, two days ahead of its US/Canada theatrical release—an impressive figure for a non-major-studio movie covering a difficult adult subject: child abduction and sex trafficking.
The film opens on July 3 for evening showtimes in select theaters. It starts officially on July 4 on over 2,600 screens.
“Time and again, Angel fans have proven that they’ll support films that are entertaining and inspiring, and Sound of Freedom is no exception. Industry experts are telling us this surge in presales is stunning the whole industry, but we believe the Angels marshaling their resources for this film aim for it to stun people outside of our industry, to wake audiences all over the globe to the plight of these children,” said Jared Geesey, SVP of Global Distribution for Angel Studios. “We are now closer to our goal of selling two million tickets this opening week to symbolize the two million children who are trapped in the horrors of trafficking each year. ”
Sound of Freedom currently has a Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 92% and an audience score of 99%.
The 135-minute feature film, Sound of Freedom, stars Jim Caviezel who plays Tim Ballard, a former federal agent who discovers his life's work after encountering a young boy and his sister who were kidnapped in Honduras by sex traffickers through subterfuge. The film shows the duplicitous methods used by traffickers to lure and kidnap children, reflecting Ballard's own experiences in dealing with traffickers as a federal agent, and later on his own, which later became Operation Underground Railroad.
According to Angel Studios' website, "Sound of Freedom has the action-packed energy of the Bourne franchise paired with the heart of films like Unbroken, Hacksaw Ridge, and 127 Hours. With a star-studded cast, a strong director, and original score, the film goes to great lengths to bring the harrowing realities of sex trafficking to life like its never been done before. Expertly produced and acted, Sound of Freedom has a larger-than-life mission to ignite the movement to end sex trafficking for good. Ending child sex trafficking cannot happen without telling stories like this one. Storytellers are the changemakers."
Filmed in the US, Mexico and Colombia, including the same island where one of the key scenes in the film happened in real life, "Sound of Freedom is a riveting film that shares the story of one man’s heroic efforts to rescue children from human trafficking, says Angel Studios CEO Neal Harmon. “Through this powerful cinematic experience, we aim to amplify the growing movement to expose this heinous violation of human rights and inspire people to take action, helping their communities put an end to this modern-day slavery once and for all.”
The film was written and directed by Mexican director, Alejandro Monteverde (Toronto winner “Bella” and “Little Boy”). It was produced by Mexican model, actor, and singer, Eduardo Verástegui, who also stars in the film. It was executive produced by Jaime Hernandez. Besides Jim Caviezel in the main role, Mira Sorvino (Mimic, Mighty Aphrodite) and Bill Camp (Joker, Birdman, 12 Years a Slave, Jason Bourne) co-star in the film.
